Fire Safety Tips for Your Office and Home

When it comes to fire safety in your British Columbia home and office, the most important thing is that you have a plan. Once a fire breaks out, you might have as little as two minutes to escape the burning building. Even if a fire is segregated to a particular area of your home or office, it’s not only the flames that you have to worry about most. Once smoke has had the time to build up, it becomes extremely difficult to breathe and even more difficult to manoeuver and escape the building. At Pacific Coast Fire Equipment, we offer products and services that range from fire safety plans to smoke alarms and portable extinguishers for your building in British Columbia. Let our team walk you through a few tips to keep in mind when preparing your home or office for a potential fire:

1. Have a plan and practice it often

This is relatively easy when done in a small home: talk to your family about an exit plan and practice it a few times a year. When it comes to an office with hundreds of people, however, your plan needs to be a bit more comprehensive. Every office should have a designated safety officer who is responsible for creating and executing the agreed upon fire safety plan. This plan should include a map of the fastest and safest path to exit the building, as well as a meeting place outside the building. Make sure your employees are aware of these procedures and that you practice them multiple times a year. Remember, Pacific Coast Fire Equipment can help you come up with a safety plan that best suits your building.

2. The best plan is prevention
There are numerous ways you can reduce the risk of a fire breaking out in your home or office:

• Replace faulty power cords
• Unplug electronics
• Have your chemical storage areas inspected
• Keep exits unblocked
• Avoid candles, scented oils and other open flames

3. The next best thing is awareness
The most important thing when a fire breaks out in your building is to be aware. Be sure that all of the smoke alarms in your home or workplace are functional. Have your building inspected by a fire safety expert and make sure that all of your equipment, including fire extinguishers and sprinkler systems, is in good working order.

Don’t compromise on fire safety in British Columbia. Call us at Pacific Coast Fire Equipment and make sure that your home or office is completely prepared if a fire ever occurs. We provide a wide array of products and services that you need to keep you and your building safe.
